Idaho Hospitals Increasingly Employing Physicians

Hospitals near Boise, Idaho, are increasingly employing physicians who are heading to hospitals due to economic pressures on their private practices, according to an Idaho Statesman report.

St. Luke’s Health System, based in Boise, has recently acquired three practices — one specializing in cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, one in gynecology and obstetrics and one in orthopedics. St. Luke’s has increased its employed physicians from 111 in 2008 to 218 currently.

Saint Alphonsus Medical Group, which is affiliated with Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise has doubled its employed physicians to 216 in just five years.

Statistics from the American Medical Association suggest however the trend is just in its beginning states as only 16 percent of physicians are currently employed by hospitals nationwide, according to the report.
