This is the third year in a row that HSS has experienced such success with hip replacement infection rates, as released by a statement from the Department of Health. The hospital also performs the most hip replacements in the state, at about 3,800 procedures annually.

HSS recorded an infection rate of 0.5 percent among total hip replacements and revision hip replacements, compared with the state average of 1.0 percent. The hospital has employed several techniques to keep its infection rate low, including the use of regional anesthesia for joint replacement and standardizing each OR to improve efficiency.

Additionally, patients undergoing surgery at HSS are isolated from the environment with a specially designed Plexiglas enclosure which is designed to improve air flow and restrict excess personnel at the surgical field.
