The database, created with funds from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, would generate information to be used to “strengthen research on treatment outcomes and bolster comparative effectiveness research,” according to the report. HHS is currently looking into vendors to design the database.

The ARRA created the Federal Coordinating Council for Comparative Effectiveness Research, which recommended developing a national claims database, according to the report.

Payors in recent years have improved their efforts toward comparative effectiveness research, and several state-wide claims databases exist, according to the report. HHS is looking to extend the scope of these through the national database.
