There was a 79 percent lower chance of experiencing one or more in-hospital complications in a top-rated hospital than a low-rated hospital, based on all orthopedic procedures in which complications were studied.

Also across all orthopedic procedures studied, there was a 61 percent lower chance of experiencing one or more in-hospital complications in a top-rated hospital than the U.S. hospital average. Across all orthopedic procedures studied.

If all hospitals performed at the level of a top-rated hospital, 110,687 orthopedic in-hospital complications might have been avoided among Medicare patients over the three years studied.
