In the SK&A “Physicians on the Move” report, the statistics detail the rate of physicians who moved to a new location or practice, retired or passed away for the three years of 2008-2010. In 2010, the specialty on this list with the highest move rate was orthopedic foot and ankle, while the specialty with the lowest move rate was orthopedic reconstructive surgery. Note: Specialties featured are listed in alphabetical order.
1. Neurosurgeons — 10.5 percent move rate in 2010, down from 11.4 percent in 2009 and 16.6 percent in 2008.
2. Orthopedic foot and ankle — 21.1 percent move rate in 2010, up from 16.0 percent in 2009 and 12.3 percent in 2008.
3. Orthopedic reconstructive surgeons — 9.0 percent move rate in 2010, down from 9.2 percent in 2009 and 24.0 percent in 2008.
4. Orthopedic spine surgeons — 13.9 percent move rate in 2010, down from 17.1 percent in 2009 and 11.0 percent in 2008.
5. Orthopedic surgeons — 9.4 percent move rate in 2010, down from 12.1 percent in 2009 and 15.1 percent in 2008.
