Elon University Receives $17K Grant for Collegiate Concussion Research

Researchers at Elon (N.C.) University recently received a $17,000 grant to study the effects of concussions on student athletes, according to a local Fox report.

Kenneth Barnes, MD, director of sports medicine at Elon and a physician at Kernodle Clinic in Mebane, N.C., serves as principle investigator on the project. The researchers will measure verbal and visual memory, processing speed, reaction time and impulse control to determine whether athletes have suffered a concussion.

The study incorporates 200 men and women involved in college-level sports. The grant was awarded by the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.
