Dr. Mandell advocated for any new payment models to focus on financial incentives that reward higher care. Coordinated care models, such as bundle payments, could make the healthcare delivery system more integrated and efficient, he said.
However, Dr. Mandell also noted that all payment models need to be risk adjusted for factors beyond the provider’s control, such as poor nutrition and non compliance with recommendations. If not, physicians may opt against treating complex or risky patients.
