Here’s what you should know.
1. Mr. Bird will have the bone spur removed March 27. It’s expected he’ll miss between six to eight weeks. Mr. Bird had foot problems all last season, after a foul ball hit his foot in spring training. He had surgery in July 2017 and returned in late August 2017.
2. Team physician Daniel Murphy, MD, examined Mr. Bird’s foot March 25. A CT scan and an MRI showed inflammation in Mr. Bird’s foot, prompting the follow-up with Dr. O’Malley.
3. Dr. O’Malley is an associate attending orthopedic surgeon and the fellowship director of foot and ankle service at New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery.
4. Dr. O’Malley is considered an expert in total ankle replacement, arthroscopy of the ankle and post-traumatic reconstruction of the foot and ankle.
