Dr. Mark McFarland Performs Virginia’s First Outpatient Total Hip Replacement Surgery

Mark W. McFarland, MD, a physician with Orthopaedic & Spine Center in Newport News, Va., performed the first outpatient total hip replacement in Virginia at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital, according to a news release from the center.

Dr. McFarland’s 63-year-old patient received his total hip replacement using the direct anterior muscle sparing approach where the replacement is implanted through an incision in the front of the hip. The patient returned home eight hours after the surgery was completed.

While recovering from the surgery, the patient will receive support from at-home nursing care services.
