Dr. Koko Eaton confirms Rays’ Jose DeLeon tore UCL; Tommy John surgery expected

Koko Eaton, MD, confirmed Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Jose DeLeon tore his UCL and will need Tommy John surgery, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Here’s what you should know:

 

1. Dr. Eaton diagnosed Mr. DeLeon’s torn UCL March 7. He is visiting Dr. James Andrews March 8 for a second opinion. It’s expected Dr. Andrews will perform the procedure. Mr. DeLeon will miss the entire 2018 season.

 

2. Dr. Eaton has been the Rays’ team physician since 1996.

 

3. He is the founder of Eaton Orthopedics in Tampa Bay, Fla.

 

4. Dr. Andrews is a founding partner of Gulf Breeze, Fla.-based Andrews Institute for Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine. He is one of the leading orthopedic surgeons in the world, and his center is internationally recognized for its sports medicine treatment.

 

5. Dr. Andrews is the Tampa Bay Rays’ orthopedic medical director.
