Dr. McCarthy has a professional interest in total joint arthroplasty and hip arthroplasty. He is past president of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and also served on the board of directors for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and The Hip Society. He has earned two AAOS awards—the Autofranc Award and Frank Stinchfield Award — for his scientific presentations.
Dr. McCarthy has published several peer-reviewed articles and serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. Dr. McCarthy is also vice chair of the department of orthopedics at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
