Dr. John Furia, 16 Bucknell University Students Create App for Foot, Ankle Injuries

John Furia, MD, an orthopedic surgeon and partner at SUN Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Lewisburg, Pa., along with 16 students from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, developed a mobile app that helps patients recognize symptoms, common treatments and typical stages of recovery for several foot and ankle injuries, according to a university press release.

Xiannong Meng, professor of computer science at Bucknell, and Dr. Furia conceived the idea. The students built the app called “Heel They Tendon.” It focuses on four regions of the foot that are common problem areas, such as Achilles tendinopathy, planter fasciopathy, posterior tibial tendinopathy and peroneal tendinopathy. The app has been developed for multiple smartphone platforms.
