Mr. Kirkland, who is a senior at Knoxville-based University of Tennessee, has had multiple surgeries to treat chronic knee issues. He hasn’t participated in spring practice and may not play in the fall despite planning to undergo rehabilitation this summer.
Mr. Kirkland is being treated in Pensacola, Fla., by Dr. Andrews, an orthopedic surgeon with extensive experience performing surgeries on notable athletes.
Mr. Kirkland missed the entire 2017 season because of a meniscus tear and five games in 2016 due to an ankle sprain.
