Dr. David Polly Resigns From AAOS Board

David Polly, MD, a University of Minnesota orthopedic surgeon, has resigned from the board of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons following controversy regarding his more than $1 million in consulting fees from Medtronic, according to a report in the Star-Tribune.

Dr. Polly served as the secretary of the Academy Board of Specialty Societies.

Dr. Polly continues to serve as the head of the University of Minnesota’s spine surgery department. Dr. Polly received $1.2 million from Medtronic between 2003 and 2007, according to the report.

Although these consulting relationships are legal, Dr. Polly resigned saying that the investigations into his relationship with Medtronic were an “unnecessary distraction” to the Academy’s efforts, according to the report.
