David Altchek, MD, performed Tommy John surgery on New York Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius’ right elbow, ESPN reports.

Here’s what you should know:

1. The Yankees said Mr. Gregorius sustained a tear in his right ulnar collateral ligament during the team’s Sept. 29 or Sept. 30 game against the Boston Red Sox.

2. Mr. Gregorius continued to play through the UCL tear for the remaining four games of the American League Division Series against the Red Sox.

3. Dr. Altchek performed the procedure Oct. 17 at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

4. Dr. Altchek is an orthopedic surgeon and co-chief emeritus for Hospital for Special Surgery’s sports medicine and shoulder services. He is also the medical director for the New York Mets and a medical consultant for the NBA.
