Dr. David Altchek operates on Rays prospect Nick Bitsko

David Altchek, MD, surgically corrected a labrum issue in the right shoulder of Tampa Bay Rays 2020 first-round pick Nick Bitsko, MLB.com reported Dec. 2.

Mr. Bitsko experienced mild discomfort in his shoulder while training remotely. The team shut him down, and symptoms initially subsided. However, while ramping back up, the discomfort returned, which led to a surgical consult.

He will miss a portion of the 2021 season as he recovers from the procedure.

Dr. Altchek is an attending orthopedic surgeon and co-chief emeritus of HSS’ Sports Medicine Institute in New York City. He is the medical director for the New York Mets and a medical consultant for the NBA. He is the founding medical director of HSS Florida.
