Here are four key points on Dr. Thomas:
1. Baseball runs in his family, as his father was a minor league baseball player and his great uncle was New York Yankees’ Hall of Fame pitcher Waite Hoyt. Currently, Dr. Thomas is the senior medical consultant and spring training team physician for the Washington Nationals.
2. When Dr. Thomas began in the 1980s, sports medicine was relatively new and Dr. Thomas first became a team physician for the Marlins, including the 1997 World Series championship team. He has a World Series ring for his work with the team that year.
3. Dr. Thomas told SpaceCoastDaily that working with local athletes is the most valuable experience for him.
4. Dr. Thomas received his medical degree from Tulane University in New Orleans, La., and completed his residency at USAF Regional Hospital in Elgin, Fla.
“I really do have to pinch myself,” Dr. Thomas told SpaceCoastDaily.com. “It is such a privilege. I love it intensely. I love helping the players.”
