College athlete dies from complications from Tommy John surgery

A 20-year-old baseball player from Fairfax, Va.-based George Mason University died after complications from Tommy John surgery, The New York Times reported June 19.

Sang Ho Baek died June 12 at Salisbury, Md.-based TidalHealth Peninsula Regional. His procedure was June 8. Sang Ho Baek, a right-handed pitcher, had suffered injuries through the season, a teammate told the Times.

His father, Seong Han Baek, told the Times that the family is left with questions after his son’s death.

“Our family is devastated and we want answers to why our healthy son would die so suddenly after routine surgery,” Seong Han Baek said.
