Coalition of Orthopedic, Neurosurgery, Other Specialists’ Groups Launch Eleventh-Hour Ad Campaign Against Reform Bill

As the U.S. Senate prepares to vote on the health reform bill, a coalition of specialty societies has launched an advertising campaign to persuade wavering senators to vote against the bill, according to a release from the specialty societies.

The coalition includes the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, as well as several subspecialty societies.

The coalition, called Physicians United for Patients, will run radio and print ads in Arkansas, Nebraska, Connecticut, Maine, and the District of Columbia. The ads will urge senators in those states to vote against a healthcare bill because it is “bad medicine” for patients.

“The Senate bill inappropriately expands the role of the federal government in healthcare decision-making and undermines the doctor-patient relationship that is critical to a healthcare delivery system that works for patients,” said Troy M. Tippett, MD, president of AANS.

“While we are united in our desire to improve healthcare and extend coverage, the current Senate bill is not the cure to what ails our healthcare system,” said Joseph D. Zuckerman, MD, president of the AAOS.
