This information release was made possible in May when a judge lifted a 33-year-old injunction against publicly revealing individual Medicare payment data. CMS is currently seeking “the most appropriate policies” for physician payment disclosure.
CMS has said many aspects of healthcare have changed since the rule banning disclosure was enacted in 1979. These changes include an increase in public desire for information; the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which authorizes the release of physician payment data to qualified entities; and Medicare pay being more standardized.
