CMS Pays $520M in Incentives for Physician Quality Reporting, E-Prescribing

In 2011, CMS paid more than 520 million in incentive payments as part of the Physician Quality Reporting System and the Electronic Prescribing (eRx) Incentive Program, according to the “2011 Physician Quality Reporting System and Electronic Prescribing Incentive Program Experience Report,” released by CMS.

The Physician Quality Reporting System is a reporting program that offers incentives and payment adjustments to eligible professionals, who satisfy certain criteria for reporting quality data.  

The Electronic Prescribing (eRx) Incentive Program uses a combination of incentive payments and payment adjustments to encourage electronic prescribing by eligible professionals.

Key highlights from the report include:

•    In 2011, 280,229 eligible professionals participated individually in PQRS.
•    CMS paid a total of $261 million in PQRS incentive payments in 2011.
•    In 2011, 282,382 eligible professionals participated in the eRx Incentive Program, which is a 116 percent increase from the total number of participants in 2010.
•    CMS paid a total of $285 million in eRx incentive payments in 2011.
