Cleveland Clinic’s Dr. William Seitz Gives 3-Year-Old Patient a New Hand

William Seitz, MD, an orthopedic hand surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic, recently completed four surgeries that gave a three-year-old patient a new set of hands, according to a Free Press story.

Dr. Seitz has performed more than 400 bone-lengthening procedures during his career. The procedure includes taking bone from the patient’s hand or toes to form the new fingers. He has also published a study in the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery that reported the outcomes of 141 patients with the surgery. Of these patients, 88 percent had no difficulty performing daily activities.

Overall, 98.5 percent of the families who received treatment from Dr. Seize said they would do it again, and 92 percent of the patients were very satisfied with their ability to manipulate objects and improve their handwriting.
