Canadians Wait Longest for Orthopedic Surgery at 33.7 Weeks

Canadians wait an average of 113 days for medically necessary treatment, and the specialty with the longest wait is orthopedic surgery, posting an average wait of 33.7 weeks between referral by a primary care physician and treatment, according to a release by the Fraser Institute.

Canadian patients’ average orthopedic waiting time actually fell three weeks from last year, but overall wait times for Canadians are about the same length they were 10 years ago, despite the government’s healthcare spending increases, the Canadian-based Institute reported.

“Throwing more money at a fundamentally broken system will not solve the wait time problem,” the Institute said in the release. “Canadians deserve healthcare they can depend on, and it’s time for politicians of all political stripes to admit the current system is a failure.”
