Brigham and Women’s Hospital Surgeons Perform Double Hand Transplant

Surgeons and specialists at Brigham and Women’s Hospital recently performed a double hand transplant on a 65-year-old patient who lost both his arms below the elbows and legs below the knees from sepsis, according to a report in the Boston Globe.

The team included more than 40 surgeons, nurses and support staff to complete the 12-hour procedure. The surgery involved transplanting skin, tendons, muscles, ligaments, bone and blood vessels.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital performed the first double hand transplant earlier this year.
