Behrooz A. Akbarnia, MD (San Diego Center for Spinal Disorders, La Jolla, Calif.). Dr. Akbarnia is the medical director of the San Diego Center for Spinal Disorders as well as a clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of California, San Diego. He is known for his expertise in scoliosis and spinal deformity care.

 

He served as president of the Scoliosis Research Society and is a member of several other professional societies. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Akbarnia is the founder of the Growing Spine Congress Foundation, supporting research and educational activities. He also spearheads the Growing Spine Study Group, an international work group to improve early onset scoliosis.

 

Dr. Akbarnia earned his medical degree at Tehran University Medical School in Iran and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center. His additional training includes a pediatric orthopedic surgery residency at Shriners and St. Christopher Hospitals in Philadelphia. He also completed the John H. Moe Scoliosis Fellowship Program.
