AOSSM: Baseline Concussion Testing Helpful for Young Athletes

Research presented at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports medicine’s annual meeting showed that baseline cognitive testing for youth athletes is an important part of concussion assessment, according to an organization news release.

The research analyzed the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool-2 use among 1,134 athletes participating in interscholastic athletic teams at 15 Phoenix high schools. The predominant male sport was football and the predominant female sport was volleyball.

Females scored significantly higher on the SCAT2 total score than males, and athletes with a prior history of concussion scored lower than athletes who didn’t.
