Antibiotic Nails Can Treat Infections After Tibial Fracture Surgery

Antibiotic-impregnated cement nails can be an effective tool for treating tibial infections after undergoing surgery for a tibial fracture, according to an AAOS Now report.

In a retrospective study of 32 patients who underwent intramedullary nailing and developed deep postoperative infection, researchers found antibiotic-impregnated IM nails cleared 75 percent of infections. The most common infection was Staphylococcus aureus.
