American College of Sports Medicine Partners With Sanford Health on Youth Sports Health & Safety Institute

The American College of Sports Medicine has partnered with Sanford Health in Fargo, N.D., and Sioux Falls, S.D., to create the National Youth Sports Health & Safety Institute, according to an ACSM news release.

The Institute will support efforts to develop, advance and disseminate comprehensive research, education, recommendations, guidelines and policy to enhance the experience and safety of children involved in sports. According to a recent poll, 91 percent of Americans feel sports participation is important for children and adolescents, and 94 percent would like to see more initiatives to ensure the health and safety of young athletes.

The Institute will focus on providing education and prevention techniques for mild traumatic brain injury and concussion, heart illness and injury, overuse injuries and unique clinical conditions such as Type 1 diabetes.
