American College of Radiology Holds Offshore Physicians to Higher Teleradiology Standards Than U.S. Physicians

The American College of Radiology has released a statement on the accountability of offshore physicians who interpret images by teleradiology, arguing these physicians should meet or exceed the same standards met by physicians practicing within the United States.

The ACR also states that physicians practicing outside the United States must submit to the jurisdiction of and be accountable to all applicable state and federal laws in the United States.

Also, U.S. radiology groups and other providers should enter into contracts for interpretation of imaging examinations provided only by offshore physicians who meet certification standards by the American Board of Radiology or the American Osteopathic Board of Radiology. Those criteria require that they possess the appropriate licensure, liability coverage, credentials and hospital medical staff or other healthcare facility privileges.
