Joe Ackerson, MD, chairman of the Alabama Statewide Sports Concussion Taskforce was co-author and sponsor of the legislation. The law requires athletic organizations to give information about sports concussions to all athletes and their families. Coaches are also required to have training to recognize concussions and are taught to immediately remove an athlete from play if they suspect a concussion.

Athletes will need physician clearance before returning to play after sustaining or being suspected of sustaining a concussion.
