AAOS: Tips for Preventing Winter Activity Injuries

More than 350,000 patients were treated in doctors’ offices and emergency rooms for winter sport-related injuries in 2009, according to a report by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

AAOS has released a set of guidelines for winter safety that could prevent some of these injuries. Physicians can recommend their patients:

•    Wear all appropriate protective gear.
•    Never participate in winter sporting activities alone.
•    Sled facing forward and steering with feet or rope handles.
•    Skiers stay on marked trails.
