AAOS and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association established the joint Haiti Relief and Disaster Preparedness Project Team, which presented a plan to the AAOS Board of Directors in June that outlines training and certification for surgeons to qualify as AAOS-registered Disaster Responders. The plan was approved by the Board and includes several pathways for credentialing.

The plan includes Type I responders, who are trained in trauma and ready for immediate deployment, Type II responders, who are deployed in the aftermath of a disaster, and Type III responders, who are deployed during the reconstruction and maintenance phase of the operation, according to the report.

AAOS and OTA have partnered with the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons in developing a Disaster Response Course based on the SOMOS Extremity War Injuries course.
