AAOS Honors Dr. Franklin Sim With Diversity Award

Franklin Sim, MD, an orthopedic surgeon and professor of orthopedics at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., was recently recognized with the Diversity Award from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, according to an AAOS news release.

Dr. Sim received the award for his commitment to recruiting, training and mentoring female and international physicians in orthopedics. HE has trained eight to 12 residents and one fellow each year since the early 1970s and mentored nearly 500 young physicians to date.

Dr. Sim’s mentees include Mary O’Connor, MD, chair of orthopedic surgery at Mayo Clinic in Florida and past president of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgery, and Kristy Weber, MD, chair of the division of orthopedic oncology at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.

During his career, Dr. Sim also regularly hosted visiting international orthopedic surgeons, residents and fellows, which include the chairs of orthopedic departments at hospitals in Jordan, Australia, Pakistan and Thailand. He also leads a sarcoma outreach program through Mayo Clinic Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
