AAOS Campaign Attracts Female Medical Students to Orthopedics

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons reported that women represent 3.9 percent of orthopedic surgeons and 13.8 percent of orthopedic residents, according to a Newswise report.

The academy is placing advertisements in medical student publications and sponsoring booths at student meetings to attract more women to the field. Loyola University Health System in Chicago is also helping with the effort. Twenty percent of the school’s orthopedic faculty and 16 percent of the orthopedic residents are women.
