8 athletes undergoing spine, orthopedic surgery in Q1

Multiple professional athletes had spine and orthopedic procedures done in the first quarter of 2022.

1. Orr Limpisvasti, MD, repaired Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield’s torn labrum.

2. Orthopedic surgeon Brian Cole, MD, operated on the knee of Portland Trail Blazers forward Joe Ingles.

3. Philadelphia Flyers center Sean Couturier had back surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia by Jon Yoon, MD.

4. Egan Bernal, winner of the 2019 Tour de France, had a second spine surgery Feb. 2, nine days after he was rushed to hospital following a high-speed collision with a parked bus while training.

5. FC Dallas midfielder Nicky Hernandez had surgery on his leg at Texas Health Center for Diagnostics and Surgery in Plano. Keith Heier, MD, performed the bilateral leg fasciotomy.

6. Jimmy Garoppolo underwent a “successful shoulder surgery” March 8. It was not reported who performed the procedure.

7. Former Louisiana State University linebacker Damone Clark had spine surgery to treat a herniated disc.

8. Foot and ankle specialist David Porter, MD, performed surgery on Utah Jazz center Udoka Azubuike.
