In 1996, arthroscopies performed in freestanding surgery centers comprised 15 percent of all orthopedic procedures; by 2006, that number jumped to 51 percent.

Additionally, around 99 percent of arthroscopic knee surgeries were performed in the outpatient setting, with 127,446 of the 895,999 procedures performed being anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

The researchers used the National Survey of Ambulatory Surgery to report results.
