3D-printed surfaces more osteogenic than plasma spray-coated implants, study finds

Additive manufactured titanium spinal implant surfaces may create a more osteogenic environment than titanium plasma spray-coated surfaces, according to a study in the International Journal of Spine Surgery.

Here are three things to know:

1. Researchers investigated the human osteoblast response to 3D-printed trabecular-like titanium implant surfaces compared to TPS-coated surfaces, with and without a nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite coating.

2. The 3D-printed trabecular-like surfaces led to earlier cell proliferation and higher calcium production than TPS coating.

3. The results demonstrated nanocrystalline HA coating may not be advantageous on porous titanium surfaces.
