Researchers at the University of Victoria in Canada received a $1 million grant Dec. 3 to boost their production of 3D-printed prostheses, reports Lethbridge News Now.

Three things to know:

1. TD Bank Group awarded the grant to the university's nonprofit Victoria Hand Project.

2. Nick Dechev, a mechanical engineering professor and executive director of the program, aims to fit 200 amputees with hand prostheses and 160 children with scoliosis braces over the next three years.

3. 3D printing is highly cost-effective for scoliosis patients as custom braces can be developed for around $150, rather than roughly $5,000 for traditional braces.
