Mayo Clinic Health System-Franciscan Healthcare in La Crosse, Wis., formed a joint venture with Saint Mary's University of Minnesota to provide athletic services.

Three notes:

1. Mayo will make a team physician and a fourth athletic trainer available at Winona-based SMU, offering preventive medicine, care for sports-related injuries, emergency services and more.

2. Emergency medicine and sports medicine physician Alecia Gende, DO, will serve as medical director of SMU athletics.

3. The joint venture builds on an existing partnership launched in 2019. The organizations created a program allowing SMU students to receive two years of education from Mayo Clinic faculty.
