First State Orthopaedics' Dr. Joseph Straight named president of state medical society — 5 notes

Joseph Straight, MD, was elected the 176th president of the Medical Society of Delaware during the organization's annual meeting Nov. 23, Delaware State News reports.

Five things to know:

1. Dr. Straight is director of primary care sports medicine and biologics at First State Orthopaedics in Newark, Del. He's also head team physician at Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington, Del., and Wilmington University in New Castle, Del.

2. As president for 2020, Dr. Straight plans to build off the momentum of the 2018 passage of SB 227, the Improving Access to Primary Care bill. His other priorities include improving access to and reimbursement for mental health services, as well as reforming prior authorization, opioid prescribing and medical aid in dying.

3. Dr. Straight has been involved in the Medical Society of Delaware through several past positions, including chair of the Delaware Medical Political Action Committee and vice president of the Government Affairs Committee.

4. The society also appointed Matthew Burday, DO, as president-elect; Robert Varipapa, MD, as vice president; Bhavin Dave, MD, as secretary; Prayus Tailor, MD, as treasurer, and Leo Raisis, MD, as speaker of the council.

5. Dr. Raisis and Randeep Kahlon, MD, — Dr. Straight's colleagues at First State Orthopaedics — are both past presidents of the Medical Society of Delaware.
