Michelle Carlson, MD, repaired the right ring finger of Washington Nationals shortstop Trea Turner Nov. 17.

Here's what you should know:

1. Mr. Turner injured his finger in April, when it was hit by a pitch when he attempted to bunt. He missed six weeks of the season but ultimately played through the injury, NBC Sports reports.

2. Dr. Carlson is an orthopedic surgeon at New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery.

3. She specializes in treating sports-related hand injuries and fractures, among others.
