William Meyers, MD, performed a core muscle surgery on Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby Nov. 14, the team reports.

What you should know:

1. Mr. Crosby has dealt with a sports hernia injury since training camp.

2. Dr. Meyers estimated that Mr. Crosby will need at least six weeks to recover from the procedure.

3. Dr. Meyers is the founder of Philadelphia-based Vincera Institute, where he also provides care.

4. Dr. Meyers has worked with the U.S. National Soccer Team, the Miami Dolphins and various Olympic athletes.
