Here are four health systems and orthopedic groups partnering with professional sports teams.
Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health invested in mixed martial arts and announced the sponsorship of a new team of fighters on Sept. 23. Around 40 fighters are part of the Sanford Mixed Martial Arts team, which includes former Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight champion Robbie Lawler and Logan Storley, a South Dakota native.
Three sports medicine specialists from Rockford-based OrthoIllinois continue as part of the Chicago Blackhawks medical network partnership this season. Jon Whitehurst, MD, Geoffrey Van Thiel, MD, and Scott Trenhaile, MD, will provide sports medicine care for Blackhawks players and for American Hockey League franchise, the Rockford (Ill.) IceHogs.
The Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta-based Emory Healthcare are teaming to build an orthopedics and spine center in Flowery Branch, Ga. The site will feature the Emory Sports Performance and Research Center, which will work to advance research around common sports medicine maladies. The Falcons and Emory will also provide injury prevention seminars to area high schools.
The Detroit Pistons and Detroit-based Henry Ford Health System will open the William Clay Ford Center for Athletic Medicine sports performance center in October. A team of 50 physicians, nurses, trainers and rehabilitation specialists will staff the center, catering to both professional and amateur athletes. The center expects to open for patients Oct. 15.
