Dr. Edward Nyman becomes director of sports medicine and science for USA Gymnastics

Edward Nyman, Jr., PhD, has accepted a new role as USA Gymnastics' first full-time director of sports medicine and science.

His role will be to develop and execute the strategy for providing athlete care services, as well as sports science guidance for athletes and coaches in all five competitive disciplines.

Dr. Nyman Jr. is a former gymnast and coach, educated in athletic training, biomechanics and exercise science and has vast experience in injury prevention, biostatistics and epidemiology.

His responsibilities will also include managing the team of medical professionals, ensuring medical training personnel comply with athlete safety policies, monitor and advice USA Gymnastics staff on developments in sports medicine protocols, communicate with the membership about sports-medicine-related issues, serve as liaison with the U.S. Olympic Committee on sports medicine matters, the U.S. Anti-doping Agency and other organizations related to health and wellness of athletes.

He was chair of the Department of Health and Human Performance in the College of Health Professions at the University of Findlay, Ohio, and was a tenured assistant professor of biomechanics and athletic training and developed the Exercise Performance and Rehabilitation Technology Laboratory at Findlay.

Dr. Nyman received his Bachelor of Science in exercise science from Ursinus College, P.A., completed his doctorate in exercise science with a concentration on biomechanics from the University of Toledo, Ohio. He pursued post-doctoral training as a research fellow in the division of biomedical physics for the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health.
