Detroit Tigers' Michael Fulmer to undergo Tommy John surgery after Dr. James Andrews consult

After visiting James Andrews, MD, Detroit Tigers pitcher Michael Fulmer will undergo Tommy John surgery, the Detroit Free Press reports.

What you should know:

1. Mr. Fulmer had elbow soreness after throwing a bullpen session. He visited Dr. Andrews March 19.

2. Dr. Andrews said Mr. Fulmer would need Tommy John surgery to reconstruct his ulnar collateral ligament.

3. Dr. Andrews is a founding partner of Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. He is one of the leading orthopedic surgeons in the world, and his center is internationally recognized for its sports medicine treatments.

4. Dr. Andrews is the Tampa Bay Rays' orthopedic medical director.
