John Fernandez, MD, operated on Chicago Bulls' rookie center Wendell Carter Jr.'s left thumb Jan. 21.

What you should know:

1. The 19-year-old rookie injured the ulnar collateral ligament of his left thumb during the Bulls' Jan. 15 game.

2. Mr. Carter is expected to remain in recovery for the next eight to 12 weeks.

3. Dr. Fernandez is an orthopedic surgeon at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush in Chicago. He specializes in hand, wrist and elbow surgery.

4. In addition to the Bulls, Dr. Fernandez also serves as a team physician for the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Steel.
