Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Wake Forest Baptist Health and Wake Forest University Athletics partnered to open a state-of-the-art biomechanics lab, according to WFMY News.

Five things to know:

1. The development of the pitching lab and the partnership between Wake Forest Baptist Health and Wake Forest University Athletics is one of the first of its kind in college baseball.

2. Wake Forest Baptist orthopedic surgeon Brian Waterman, MD, is the athletics program's team physician and an associate orthopedics professor at the university.

3. With expertise in shoulder and elbow care, Dr. Waterman works with athletes on injury prevention and recovery.

4. "Helping athletes prevent injuries is a major focus of our sports medicine team, and we are thrilled to be able to bring the expertise and research capabilities of Wake Forest Baptist's academic medical center directly to the players who will use this facility," Dr. Waterman said.

5. The lab will also be expanded to include athletes from various youth baseball organizations. This additional biomechanical data will be analyzed in conjunction with data from college athletes to research and identify the root causes of baseball injuries.
