Rosa Bell, MD, of the Neurological Care Center of Montgomery (Ala.), is using technology to detect Montgomery-based Alabama State University football players' concussions before, during and after game-play, according to WSFA 12 News.
Here are five things to know:
1. Dr. Bell's technology is designed to test players' real-time brain waves for head trauma while on the sidelines of their games.
2. If an athlete sustains a suspected concussion during game play, Dr. Bell can assess the individual's brain waves within minutes to determine whether he was concussed.
3. Dr. Bell tested each player to establish their individual baselines of brain activity at the beginning of the university's football season. Since then, Dr. Bell has monitored each individual's weekly brainwave assessments to check for subtle baseline changes.
4. Her system is provisionally patented both domestically and internationally.
5. Dr. Bell is board certified in neurology and clinical neurophysiology.
