Cleveland Clinic's head-impact monitoring system business acquires X2Biosystems' technology: 5 notes

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Prevent Biometrics, a Cleveland Clinic head-impact monitoring system for contact sports, acquired X2 Biosystems assets.

Here are five things to know:

1. The acquisition brings Prevent Biometrics' Impact Monitor Mouthguard and X2Biosystems' skin patch-based platform together.

2. Designed to detect potential concussion-causing impacts in real time, Prevent's mouthguard is built with technology to measure linear and rotational acceleration, impact location and direction and can count every impact an individual sustains.

3. While the mouthguard tracks the athlete's activity, its results are displayed in real time through the accompanying team app, which provides notification when an impact exceeds a pre-set threshold. The app also features access to concussion symptom checklists and tools to manage players through concussion protocol stages.

4. X2 Biosystems' skin patch-based platform X-Patch is designed to monitor traumatic brain injuries and the impacts that cause them. The patch collects head-impact data via Bluetooth. It then analyzes the results in the company's impact management system app.

5. With the acquisition, Prevent Biometrics now holds nine U.S. patents and 12 international patents for measuring and displaying head impacts.
