After spending 11 days at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Indians outfielder Leonys Martin will miss the rest of the 2018 season as he fights a bacterial infection, ESPN reports.
Here's what you should know:
1. Dermot Phelan, MD, and Thomas Waters, MD, are treating Mr. Martin, who became ill following an Aug. 7 game. The physicians discovered a bacterial infection had entered his bloodstream and released toxins, damaging his internal organs.
2. The physicians believe Mr. Martin will make a full recovery but suggested he take time off for his heart and other organs to recover.
3. Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona said, "I think he wanted to play, but the doctors thought with what happened, he needs some time to let the body heal. We fully support that, even though we miss him a lot. It's the right thing to do."
4. Dr. Phelan is a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic, and Dr. Waters is a critical care specialist there.
